A maxi dress is more versatile than you might think and can easily be transformed from casual to elegant to workplace-ready depending on how you accessorize. Striking a balance between casual and glamorous, it's no wonder the maxi skirt continues to be a major trend. This closet staple works year-round, but feels most at home in our summer wardrobes—lightweight fabrics and pretty prints go hand-in-hand with the super-feminine style.Length is Key: Just like with the maxi dress, the maxi skirt should be ankle/heel-skimming. If you need to tailor your skirt or get it hemmed so that it’s just right, it’s worth it!Waist Height (Rise): Some maxi skirts are low-rise and others are high-rise. A mid-rise skirt is, obviously, the most versatile — if you’re looking for an investment piece that can cover a number of different occasions, mid-rise is for you. Mid-rise generally sits at the top of the hips, or just above. A high-waisted skirt should sit comfortably at your natural waist (near the navel), and a low-rise one should sit easily (and securely!) around your hips.Volume: Maxi skirts are great for balancing your frame. A slim skirt will emphasize narrow hips, or balance a bigger booty if you’re smaller on top. A voluminous skirt will visually balance a larger bustline, or create a little more oomph in the back. Work your awesome body however you want to!Try the skirt on under good lighting before buying. Walk in it, swish around in it and see if it feels comfortable first. If you're tripping up, it's too long. Then check how it looks in the mirror––the more streamlined styles will be the most flattering, while the flouncy Bohemian styles can add weight and don't flatter all figures.
While maxi skirts have proved themselves to be a classic item, many of this season’s hottest options incorporate trends like tie-dye or high-low hems. To achieve a fully on-trend look without looking too overdone, try keeping your outfit monochromatic.Wear the right shoes. If you're petite, wear heels to give you the added height to cope with the skirt length and to elongate your silhouette. If you're taller, flats or heels will work with a maxi skirt, although heels are usually preferred for evening wear. Most heels will work well with maxi skirts but always check in the mirror before deciding. - Beaded sandals are appropriate for a flowing, Bohemian maxi skirt look. Espadrilles also look very casual and beach-like.
- Wedge shoes look great with maxi skirts and give you added height to carry off the longer skirt.
- Avoid flats that are completely closed in, or loafers. These look frumpy with long skirts. Pointy toes and knee-high boots don't work either. And clogs and sneakers tend to look too chunky.
And always remember to accessorize. Accessories are your friends. Wear a necklace, a watch, a bracelet. Add a belt, thick or thin, over the maxi skirt or over your shirt. Add a cute hat or a fun pop of lip color. And try different shoes. I love wearing flats or sandals with my maxis, but heels work too. Just have fun with it!
Every woman ought to have at least one pair of boots. Once ankle booties came on to the scene, deciding between them and my always reliable knee-high boots became somewhat of a dilemma. I love boots cause they can be worn any time of the year.ANKLE BOOTS
Booties and ankle boots were huge last year, and the trend doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. Ankle boots, like their name would suggest, sit at or slightly above ankle-height. Though high-heeled ankle booties have been seen on celebrities and fashionistas, flat ankle boots, especially with embellishment have become increasingly popular as well.Choose your heel height wisely. For most of us, flat ankle boots will be a more practical option than their high-heeled ones. For fancier occasions, ultra high-heeled platform booties are a stylish, showstopping option. Whether they're flat or heeled, ankle boots and long skirts or maxi skirts are classic combinations for fall. Show off those legs by paring ankle boots with leggings, skinny jeans, or short skirts and dresses. They also look amazing when worn with tights.Medium: Mid-Calf & Knee-High Boots
Medium rise (mid-calf and knee-high) boots are likely what you think of when you hear the word “boot.” Medium rise boots are always in style. Classic rise boots edge up summer staples like sundresses and denim cut-offs. The classics never go out of style!Know your occasion. Classic-rise boots come in a ton of different varieties, each of which can put a different spin on an outfit. In general, slouchy and cowboy styles are more casual, while luxurious leather or suede boots, heeled or flat, provide a more formal option.Tuck them in or leave them out. Skinny jeans tucked into mid-rise boots is definitely a fall staple. Another option, however, is to wear your boots under your favorite pair of boot-cut jeans. The result is totally chic–just a peek of the heel and toe of your boots!Consider your calves. Classic-rise boots can hit mid-calf or just below the knee. Either way, it’s important that the boot doesn’t gape too much–it should fit snugly but comfortably around your leg. If you have athletic or curvy legs, stretchy, slouchy, or zippered styles are a great bet.High: Thigh-High & Over-the-Knee
Over-the-knee boots are this winter’s hottest trend in shoes. They’re totally wearable no matter your height. Thigh-high boots are fashion-forward, and will definitely add some edge to your outfit. They can also look downright chic when worn with a dress or cigarette pants. Be fearless! Though tall boots can seem tough to wear, they’re incredibly easy to pull off and can really add sophistication to an otherwise basic outfit. If you would normally wear classic-rise boots with an outfit, then thigh highs would likely look equally awesome. If you’re wearing something short, make sure to add tights or leggings since over-the-knee boots are already super sexy on their own.Keep it simple. Because these boots attract attention, it’s best to keep the rest of your outfit simple so your boots will really make a statement. I like them without much embellishment or detailing since their rise alone makes a huge impact. If you like your boots embellished, it’s especially important to keep the rest of your look simple and go easy on the accessories.
What’s not to love about leggings? They’re comfortable. They’re slimming. Leggings will probably never go out of style, and they add practicality to your wardrobe. I personally love leggings. When done right, they can look hip, fashionable and effortless. Done wrong, they are the epitome of tacky, shabby and, at times, vulgar. I can't help but notice all the seemingly sensible women stepping out of doors wearing leggings as pants. The number of sightings is truly disturbing and with leggings season just gearing up, I thought it be our duty to remind fashionistas how to wear them and, most importantly, how not to wear them. This is very obvious, but the safest way to wear leggings is with a tunic that hits about mid-thigh. This way, you’ll get the look of leggings, but still have plenty of hip, butt, and crotch coverage. Always a good thing!
Wear leggings under the too short skirts or dresses: If you’re not fond of the colour or texture of your legs, or if it’s just too cold, leggings are a great way to still wear your favourite dresses and skirts without revealing too much! Brave a ‘too short’ skirt, dress or pair of shorts you wouldn’t wear on its own with a pair of leggings and boots or pumps. Is Wearing Leggings as Pants Ever Okay? Think of Them as Accessories, Not Trousers. Don’t ever wear leggings as pants. We get that you love showing off your legs…but that’s no excuse to show off your crotch and behind, too. No one is interested in seeing your hip bones, heaven forbid, camel toe and believe me, we can see it all. So, always wear your leggings with a top that covers everything that needs to be covered. Feeling a bit frumpy with a long, oversized top? Then emphasise your waist with a cute belt or try leggings paired with an oversized button-down or long, punk-inspired t-shirt. Printed and textured leggings: If you’re bored of the same boring black or grey leggings, why not try something different by pairing your fave dress with printed leggings. Think floral, abstract or even go grunge with a cross motif. Or, go a step further by braving a pair of leather leggings – but keep the rest of your look simple to avoid looking like a wannabe biker chick.Don’t forget about jeggings! If leggings aren’t exactly your thing, why not meet the trend half way buy getting yourself a pair of jeggins (jeans + leggings). They’re not as thick as denim jeans, but they’re not as “skimpy” as leggings either… the best of both worlds! As you can see, there are many ways to wear leggings. Whether we choose to dress our leggings down or dress them up, there is one certain thing – we will need to have several different pairs of leggings for the upcoming season!
